Stay Cool With The ‘Ice Queen’ Of French Cinema – Catherine Deneuve

At 70 and with more than 100 films to her credit, including the controversial ‘Belle De Jour’; the fiercely private Catherine Deneuve embodies French chic, aging well and being ‘bien dans sa peau’. She has been the muse for Yves Saint Laurent and the face of MAC, L’Oreal, Louis Vuitton and Chanel No.5, among others.

In her new film ‘On My Way’ she stars as Bettie, an aging beauty queen, dealing with a failed relationship and an ailing restaurant. She takes a road trip to clear her head. Along the way she picks up a passenger; her charming, rude but comforting grandson. The film is set in the lovely French scenery of rural Brittany.

Whilst she has had many relationships, Catherine has only been married once, at 21, to British photographer David Bailey. She has two children. A son Christian from her relationship with director Roger Vadim and a daughter, Chiara from her relationship with actor Marcello Mastroianni.

Kate Moss arranged to be photographed with Deneuve after a meeting with David Bailey. They were photographed in Paris by Patrick Demarchelier.

What is the secret to her evergreen beauty? Her daily routine includes a Citron Presse at 5pm. She credits good genes, living a good life, keeping out of the sun and drinking lots of water.

Make your own Citron Presse with the recipe from the famous ‘Cafe de Flore’.

Carine Roitfeld – Starting Over In Style: Vogue to Harper’s Bazaar

Starting over is seldom easy and success is never guaranteed. Carine Roitfeld, 59 shows the way by doing it in style. Self belief and drawing on every bit of past experience is key.

Roitfeld started out as model and erstwhile stylist for French Elle. Work with Mario Testino lead to a very successful partnership as muse and stylist to Tom Ford at Gucci.

She became the controversial editor of French Vogue in 2001 and made an acrimonious departure on 31 January 2011. Her new found ‘freedom’ lead to several highly successful projects and collaborations.

In 2011 she published the large format book Irreverent with Rizzoli and styled two collections for Chanel. She worked with Lagerfeld starring as Coco Chanel in The Little Black Jacket project.

In 2012 she launched CR Fashion Book, a biannual style magazine, of which the third edition has just launched. The first issue was titled Rebirth, a reference to her new career and in anticipation of the birth of her first grandchild.

The same year also saw her launch her own exciting make-up line with MAC. CR Fashion Book lead to Mademoiselle C, a film by Fabien Constant, which documents the making of the launch issue of the magazine. It follows the format of the Vogue September Issue film. It documents Carine’s everyday life, work and family; including a lesson in classical ballet, her favourite way of staying in shape. Carine says it is a film about friendship: “I think after this film, people will understand that you can work in fashion [and] be a real person, not to be so selfish, to be a hard worker, to have a family, and to have friends.”

At the end of 2012 Duncan Edwards, President and CEO of Hearst Magazines announced the appointment of Carine Roitfeld as Global Fashion Director for all 26 international issues of Harpers Bazaar. Carine had made the very successful journey from their well known rival Conde Nast.

Guardian named Carine as one of their 50 Best-Dressed in March 2013.

Mademoiselle C has been on limited release in art cinemas in the UK and is out on Blu-Ray and DVD at the end of October 2013.

Karl Lagerfeld thinking pink at Chanel.

“Think pink as Diana Vreeland said – but don’t wear it”. Thus starts the chapter on style in The World According to Karl; a collection on the wit and wisdom of Karl Lagerfeld.

Famous last words or provocative controversiality? His Spring/Summer 2014 and Autumn/Winter 2014 collections looked decidedly rose tinted. Raspberry deconstructed boucle suits, were followed by delicate, tiered chiffon dresses reminiscent of an artist’s colourful palette.
