My Year In The Fast Lane – Going Global.


This last year has been an epic journey for me establishing my business http://www.engelaminshull.com globally and completing an international coaching certification program. I am now a Divine Living Certified Business Coach.

The journey to entrepreneurship starts with the decision to ignore all stop signs in your mind and truly GO for what you want! As an entrepreneur it is also important to check in for little pit stops and nourishment on your way. My work and travels took me to eight cities around the world starting with London to Prague via Cape Town and then on to Paris and several visits to Lyon.

When August came around, LA and the hospitality of Ritz Carlton, Marina del Rey beckoned. I shopped Rodeo Drive and put plans in action for an exciting joint venture over dinner at the Beverley Wilshire Hotel.

I hiked the Temescal Canyon trail  above Santa Monica, styled clients on Venice Beach and graduated with 31 women from around the world.

Fabulous at Forty: Diane Von Furstenberg Wrapping Up At Galeries Lafayette.


Following on from her “Journey of a Dress” retrospective in Los Angeles, Diane Von Furstenberg will continue celebrating four decades of her iconic wrap dress by taking over 12 windows and the main entrance at Galeries Lafayette’s Paris Flagship store from September 3 to 30. She will present a capsule collection of 12 dresses in 6 heritage prints as well as bags and a selection of small leather goods.

From 25th of August, Diane will feature in an advertising campaign shot by Jean-Paul Goude. She is expected to attend an event at the store in late September to coincide with Paris Fashion Week.

Diane launched her first line at 22 and the wrap dress based on a ballerina wrap at 26. She was motivated by the drive for independence and said, “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the women I wanted to be.”

Her dresses have been worn by the rich and famous for their style, iconic prints and comfort and are favoured by the Duchess of Cambridge. A dress from her 1975-1976 collection has been immortalised at The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

An early adopter of new technology, Von Furstenberg has designed a range of eyewear for Google Glass.

Diane had her term as President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America extended through to 2016. CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said, “The board’s unanimous decision to ask Diane to stay on as president is testament to the great growth the CFDA has had under her leadership.”

Parlez-Vous M&S? – Twenty New Food Stores To Open In France.


Marks and Spencer Chief Executive Marc Bolland’s announcement that the retailer is planning to expand its French footprint with 20 stand-alone Food stores, saw shares rise 2.2% to 469.90p at the close yesterday. At an Investor Seminar in Paris, he announced an ambitious plan to drive international growth by opening 250 new stores in Western Europe, India, China, Russia and the Middle East.

Bolland said: “We are focusing on Flagship stores to deliver brand presence and stand-out. We also see great opportunities in fresh Food and Lingerie and Beauty concepts.”

The plans for Paris would make France it’s largest food market outside the UK. M&S hopes that the expansion will bring relief from the pain it has suffered in the over saturated UK market.

A new franchise partnership with SFH Invest will see three new on-street stores, trading from c.300 square metres, open this summer.

M&S’s International arm made profits of £120 million on sales of £1.1 billion last year. The new French Food stores will offer customers convenient access to a range of up to 2500 exceptional quality, fresh M&S products.

Celine’s New Flagship Store Opens At No.103 Mount Street London.


Phoebe Philo and her team opened the doors to their elegantly designed new flagship store on Mount Street today. Clear grey marmorino plastered walls and marbled floors inlaid with semi-precious stones, greeted eager customers. Danish artist FOS created specially commissioned artistic details including door handles, floor lamps and a chandelier.

Born in Paris and educated at Central Saint Martins in London, Philo won the ‘British Designer of the Year’ award in 2010 and the ‘International Designer of the Year’ award in 2011.

In a move away from her usual minimalism and understated elegance, Philo introduced bright colours and bold graphic prints for Spring /Summer 2014. The layered look and asymmetrical pleated skirts were teamed with coats and blazers.

Stay Cool With The ‘Ice Queen’ Of French Cinema – Catherine Deneuve


At 70 and with more than 100 films to her credit, including the controversial ‘Belle De Jour’; the fiercely private Catherine Deneuve embodies French chic, aging well and being ‘bien dans sa peau’. She has been the muse for Yves Saint Laurent and the face of MAC, L’Oreal, Louis Vuitton and Chanel No.5, among others.

In her new film ‘On My Way’ she stars as Bettie, an aging beauty queen, dealing with a failed relationship and an ailing restaurant. She takes a road trip to clear her head. Along the way she picks up a passenger; her charming, rude but comforting grandson. The film is set in the lovely French scenery of rural Brittany.

Whilst she has had many relationships, Catherine has only been married once, at 21, to British photographer David Bailey. She has two children. A son Christian from her relationship with director Roger Vadim and a daughter, Chiara from her relationship with actor Marcello Mastroianni.

Ines de la Fressange Paris’ LifeWear Uniqlo Collection.


Hot on the heels of their 2012 collaboration with French basics brand Comptoir des Cottoniers, Uniqlo has done it again. Available in Paris since November 2013; their Ines de la Fressange Paris range is set to be ‘pret-a-porter’ in London from mid March 2014.

An international top model since 1975, Ines became the muse for Lagerfeld, modelling regularly for Chanel from 1983 to 1990. She has been the brand ambassador for luxury shoemaker Roger Vivier for the last decade and is part of the L’Oreal “Dream Team.” Her French style guide “La Parisienne” published in 2010, became a bestseller available in 17 languages.

A French Affair


Forget the Presidential love triangle; the high street is in love with France. Bag your own bit of Gallic flair with le sac du jour – the bucket bag. Update your wardrobe with the bag created by Angele Lancel in 1925.

Lancel opened her store near the lively new Opera Garnier in Paris in 1876, selling smoking accessories. In 1925 she creates the iconic bucket bag renamed the Premier Flirt in 2006.

In 1987 the bucket bag is rereleased under the name Elsa. It quickly charms millions of women to become an international bestseller for the house. I succumb to its charms buying two in different sizes.

Lancel reinterprets its cult bucket bag in 2006 and rechristens it the Premier Flirt.

Lancel expresses its proximity to the French cultural background with collaborations with French icons Isabelle Adjani and Brigitte Bardot. The design elements of the 2012 BB bag respected the actress’s strong conservation convictions as all materials were environmentally friendly and the leather look required no animal hides.

For Spring/Summer 2014 the slouchy bucket bag is the perfect accessory. Topshop, Next, H&M, Zara and French Connection amongst others, all have affordable versions of the bag, allowing for a balance between casual and chic.

Phoebe Philo – Sneaking Into Work.


Paris born Phoebe Philo, creative director at Celine, received and OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. With fashion’s current emphasis on menswear, Phoebe is leading the way to comfort.

Phoebe, already credited for spiking sales of New Balance 620’s and Nike Air Max, wore Stan Smith sneakers during Paris Fashion Week last year.

Marc Jacobs sported the trainers at the British Fashion Awards, whilst other supporters include Gisele Bundchen, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss.

The trainers named after US tennis player, Stan Smith who won Wimbledon men’s singles in 1972, had a fashion hey day in the 90’s. More than 22million pairs were sold.

Hermès – The Kelly, The Birkin And Other Keepsakes.


Hermès, Paris evokes images of princesses, famous actresses and the wealthy elite. In 1837 Thierry Hermès opened his workshop making quality saddlebags,  harnesses and horse carriages in the heart of Paris.

In 1892 the prototype of the Kelly bag was used as a saddle holder. By the 1930’s it had evolved into the Sac à dépêches, a spacious travel bag. Acclaimed costume designer Edith Head, introduced Grace Kelly to the bag when she chose accessories for the actress starring in ‘To Catch A Thief .’ After her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, a photo of her with the bag appeared in Life magazine. Instantly known as the Kelly bag it was officially renamed in 1977.

Actress and singer Jane Birkin, well known for carrying her belongings in a straw bag, was the inspiration behind the Hermès Birkin created in 1984. Priced between £4,800 and £100,000, the Birkin remains a best seller of the brand.

The bag is associated with long waiting lists (up to 5 years) as depicted in the TV series ‘Sex And The City’ and the book ‘Bringing Home the Birkin: My life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Handbag’ by Michael Tonello.

Hermès is renowned for its equestrian inspired silk scarves, bracelets, ties and watches. Last time I visited I acquired the iconic Multi-Loop Bridle bracelet.
