Can The Sugar And Shake Your Cravings…

There are times when too much of a good thing can be great and then there are times when it is simply excessive. The occasional Starbucks tea and ginger biscuit had become a daily habit. So it was that I found myself reaching for  Sarah Wilson’s ‘I Quit Sugar’ book and started on the program. That was ten days ago.

Recent health reports have shown a marked increase in earlier onset of diabetes type 2 and heart disease. Research suggests that sugar may be the culprit and that it may be as addictive as cocaine whilst being as harmful as tobacco.

Sarah Wilson, a former editor of Australian Cosmopolitan, wrote about her research and personal experience on a low sugar program to treat her auto-immune disease. Her e-book turned into the New York Times bestseller ‘I Quit Sugar’.

Sarah says, “Quitting sugar is about eating the way we did before the age of industrial sugar. A hundred years ago we ate 1 kg of sugar a year – now we eat 60kg a year.”

One teaspoon of sugar = 4.2g. The World Health Organisation has recently updated guidelines for daily intake from 40g per day down to 20g (5 teaspoons). What you are actively looking to reduce is fructose, which converts directly to fat. It inhibits the immune system, upsets the mineral balance and is linked to early ageing and dementia.

Get started now:
1) replace sugar with healthy fats and protein
2) use the right oils and spreads – avoid all polyunsaturated fats such as sunflower oil and switch to organic butter and coconut oil instead
3) drink lots of water – at least two litres a day
4) do some exercise every day – 30 to 60 minutes
5) learn to read labels – choose foods with less that 5g of sugar per 100g.

Sarah devised an 8 week program to kick the sugar habit for good. Foods that are particularly helpful include coconut oil, cacao, cheese, chicken, chai tea, chia seeds, cinnamon, coconut water and coffee.

What to expect:
I went cold turkey and suffered withdrawal symptoms with flu-like muscle aches and headaches for the first 3 days. I persisted and less than two weeks into the program I am enjoying heightened energy levels, radiant skin and a better night’s sleep. I eat exactly what I want with an emphasis on organic vegetables and protein and am happy to say that I no longer crave the sweet stuff.

This is not a diet, it is a way of living without processed food. Three years from when she first started, Sarah’s new book ‘I Quit Sugar for Life’ is released in the UK this week.

Boris Johnson – ‘Mad Props To The Real G’

“London is without doubt the greatest city on the planet” said Boris Johnson after figures showed that the number of foreign tourists surged by 20% last summer. July to September saw 4.9 million visitors, making it the world’s most popular destination and setting London on course to welcome a record 16 million overseas visitors in one year.

Boris Johnson – The Mayor of London.

The charismatic mayor known for his sense of humour and public pranks such as the high wire act during the 2012 Olympics, is London’s most passionate promoter. Outspoken on petty bureaucracy, bicycle thieves, the airports commission’s plans for Heathrow, tennis with Pippa and life’s general absurdities; he has now waded into the Southpark Skateboard development debacle.

The ‘long live Southbank, you can’t remove history’ campaign was set up by supporters of London’s world famous Southbank Skatepark in defense of development plans for a Southbank Centre that will see the park moved to an alternate site 120 yards away under Hungerford Bridge.

Mr Johson said: “The skate park is the epicentre of UK skateboarding and is part of the cultural fabric of London. This much-loved community space has been used by thousands of young people over the years. It attracts tourists from across the world and undoubtedly adds to the vibrancy of the area. It helps to make London the great city it is.”

Skateboarders were delighted to receive the Mayor’s support. Tommy Wright said: “We’re stoked the Mayor is backing us. Anyone down for preservation gets mad props. Boris is a real G.”

The Urban Dictionary describes a “real G” as “a robust individual who did not change course under rough circumstances”. “Mad props” means thank you.

The Creative Director of arts organisation UpRise, involved in the Long Live Southbank campaign said: “It is great that Boris recognises the importance of the cultural heritage that exists in this space.”

Catherine Croft, Director of the 20th Century Society conservation group said: “The proposed massive extensions to the Centre will overwhelm one of the best groups of brutalist buildings in the UK, if not the world.”

Hermès – The Kelly, The Birkin And Other Keepsakes.

Hermès, Paris evokes images of princesses, famous actresses and the wealthy elite. In 1837 Thierry Hermès opened his workshop making quality saddlebags,  harnesses and horse carriages in the heart of Paris.

In 1892 the prototype of the Kelly bag was used as a saddle holder. By the 1930’s it had evolved into the Sac à dépêches, a spacious travel bag. Acclaimed costume designer Edith Head, introduced Grace Kelly to the bag when she chose accessories for the actress starring in ‘To Catch A Thief .’ After her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, a photo of her with the bag appeared in Life magazine. Instantly known as the Kelly bag it was officially renamed in 1977.

Actress and singer Jane Birkin, well known for carrying her belongings in a straw bag, was the inspiration behind the Hermès Birkin created in 1984. Priced between £4,800 and £100,000, the Birkin remains a best seller of the brand.

The bag is associated with long waiting lists (up to 5 years) as depicted in the TV series ‘Sex And The City’ and the book ‘Bringing Home the Birkin: My life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Handbag’ by Michael Tonello.
