The Eagle has Landed – American Eagle at Westfield London


Launching the first UK branch of American Eagle at Westfield London, Executive Vice President Simon Nankervis said, “The brand’s changed since 2011 and we’ve moved from being a US retailer to a global retailer.”

Nankervis said, “Our ranges will be differentiated because the guy in London wears his jeans tighter and the girls [follow] trends a lot quicker because of the proximity to Europe. It will be closer to what we do in New York than Middle America.”

The opening at Westfield London will be followed by another 10,000sq ft store over two floors, on the upper level at Westfield Stratford on Saturday. From next Wednesday Bluewater shoppers will be able to visit their own local store.

Queen Bestows Damehood On Zandra Rhodes


“Personality and jewellery will conquer everything;” said  Zandra Rhodes and now it has. Queen Elizabeth has bestowed one of  her highest honours,  a damehood, on the British fashion and textile designer.

Rhodes received the title, equivalent to a knighthood, as part of the annual Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Rhodes, born in Chatham Kent in 1940, is the daughter of a fashion instructor and graduated from The Royal College of Art in 1964. In 1968 whilst lecturing at art college, she opened The Fulham Road Clothes Shop in Chelsea with Sylvia Ayton. She set up on her own and designed her first collection in 1969.

Considered too outrageous by traditional British manufacturers she took her designs to New York where Diana Vreeland featured it in American Vogue.

Famous for her vivid prints and colourful hair, she is considered a pillar of Sixties and Seventies British fashion. Having kept samples of all her work she founded the Textile and Fashion Museum in Bermondsey in 2003.

She has designed for the rich and famous, actors and royalty including Diana, Princess of Wales, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Onassis, Freddy Mercury, Kylie Minogue, Paris Hilton, Bianca Jagger and Anastasia.

Known as “The Princess of Punk” Zandra has won many awards throughout her career including ” Designer of the Year” in 1972. She was made Commander of the British Empire in 1997 and holds nine Honorary Doctorates from Universities in the USA and UK.

Rhodes lost her mother to cancer  and  supports Mayor Boris Johnson as Breast Cancer “ambassador”  to raise awareness of the devastating disease.

Honoured with her was Hilary Mantel, author of celebrated Tudor-era novels “Bring Up The Bodies” and “Wolf Hall.”

Angelina Jolie, though not a British citizen, was made an honorary dame for her work toward eradicating sexual violence worldwide.

Can The Sugar And Shake Your Cravings…


There are times when too much of a good thing can be great and then there are times when it is simply excessive. The occasional Starbucks tea and ginger biscuit had become a daily habit. So it was that I found myself reaching for  Sarah Wilson’s ‘I Quit Sugar’ book and started on the program. That was ten days ago.

Recent health reports have shown a marked increase in earlier onset of diabetes type 2 and heart disease. Research suggests that sugar may be the culprit and that it may be as addictive as cocaine whilst being as harmful as tobacco.

Sarah Wilson, a former editor of Australian Cosmopolitan, wrote about her research and personal experience on a low sugar program to treat her auto-immune disease. Her e-book turned into the New York Times bestseller ‘I Quit Sugar’.

Sarah says, “Quitting sugar is about eating the way we did before the age of industrial sugar. A hundred years ago we ate 1 kg of sugar a year – now we eat 60kg a year.”

One teaspoon of sugar = 4.2g. The World Health Organisation has recently updated guidelines for daily intake from 40g per day down to 20g (5 teaspoons). What you are actively looking to reduce is fructose, which converts directly to fat. It inhibits the immune system, upsets the mineral balance and is linked to early ageing and dementia.

Get started now:
1) replace sugar with healthy fats and protein
2) use the right oils and spreads – avoid all polyunsaturated fats such as sunflower oil and switch to organic butter and coconut oil instead
3) drink lots of water – at least two litres a day
4) do some exercise every day – 30 to 60 minutes
5) learn to read labels – choose foods with less that 5g of sugar per 100g.

Sarah devised an 8 week program to kick the sugar habit for good. Foods that are particularly helpful include coconut oil, cacao, cheese, chicken, chai tea, chia seeds, cinnamon, coconut water and coffee.

What to expect:
I went cold turkey and suffered withdrawal symptoms with flu-like muscle aches and headaches for the first 3 days. I persisted and less than two weeks into the program I am enjoying heightened energy levels, radiant skin and a better night’s sleep. I eat exactly what I want with an emphasis on organic vegetables and protein and am happy to say that I no longer crave the sweet stuff.

This is not a diet, it is a way of living without processed food. Three years from when she first started, Sarah’s new book ‘I Quit Sugar for Life’ is released in the UK this week.

Dot London – April 29


The launch of .london on April 29 confirms the growing power of London as a global city “brand”. Following in the footsteps of Berlin and Vienna, this will make London the third city ahead of New York and Paris, to launch its own web domains.

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson said,”It is hard to imagine that 25 years ago few of us had heard of the internet. Now we take it for granted: watching films on demand and buying weekly groceries.”

Johnson’s open letter in the Evening Standard newspaper, who made history by becoming the first business to adopt the new “Dot London” website name,  was signed by 40 prominent figures from culture, business and charity. Johnson said, “Twenty five years ago it was about connecting computer networks. Today it is about connecting with people, communities and customers – and being relevant to them.”

From 29 April London businesses that until now defined their online presence with internet domains ending in .co.uk and .com, will have the opportunity to choose the .london domain. Web addresses are expected to go live by late August or the beginning of September and will cost from £40 per year.

An initial three month “grace period” will prioritise London-based applicants over those from outside the capital, when applying for the same name.

Sit! This basic command to the family pet is one often exercised for extensive periods by the rest of the family at home, school or the office. “Sitting is the new smoking”, says Anup Kanodia; physician and researcher at the Centre For Personalised Health Care at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Centre.

An Australian study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in October 2012 stated that every one hour of  sitting watching TV, reduces a person’s life by 22 minutes, whilst every cigarette shortens a smoker’s life by about 11 minutes.

“The chair is out to kill us,” States James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. In the UK physical inactivity is responsible for 17% of early deaths. It is an international epidemic, causing 6% of deaths around the world, making it one of the top four global killers. It can shorten life expectancy by three to five years.

The cure for physical inactivity could be as simple as walking. It costs nothing and it’s health benefits are proven. It can reduce the risk from heart disease to breast cancer. All it takes is a little self motivation and determination. With some planning it can be done anywhere in all weather.

Sitting still burns very few calories and can pile on the pounds over time. Levine States that a person with a desk job may burn 300 calories a day at work whilst the same person might burn 2,300 per day in a job that requires considerable physical output. Sitting can lead to insulin resistance and suppress the production of lipase, which is essential for turning bad cholesterol into good. Thus the link between prolonged sitting, diabetes and heart disease.

What to do if your job calls for many hours of staying seated? A study published in Diabetes Care last year showed you can improve your glucose metabolism with a two minute walk every 20 minutes. It is recommended that people engage in 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity physical activity. This is equivalent to 30 minutes each day, 5 times per week.

Churchhaven – West Coast National Park South Africa


On the drive to Kraalbaai, part of the Langebaan Lagoon, you pass a signpost for Joanne’s Beach Cottage. This is the entrance to the sanctuary that is Churchhaven; a hidden, beautiful little fishing village with white washed fisherman’s and restored holiday cottages.

The Flamingoes at Churchhaven are protected birds. Joanne’s Beach Cottage is a fully equipped self-catering cottage near Churchhaven within walking distance of the lagoon.

The village is just outside Postberg Flower Reserve, a part of the park that is only open between August and September. Only 120km outside of Cape Town on the R27 it provides a beautiful glimpse of the magnificent Namaqualand spring flowers. Daily guided walks depart from Abrahamskraal Waterhole at 10am and 1pm.

The area forms part of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve (CWCBR) designated by UNESCO in 2000.

Only descendants of the original inhabitants of Churchhaven are allowed to own property here. It does not appear on the official map of the West Coast National Park. This adds to its desolation, mystery and beauty.
