Brand You – Preparing For Success

When I was invited to be the keynote speaker for International Women’s Day, I decided to take a look at the strategies that have propelled me to success in key industries.  I spoke about the power of the individual: investment and return, self knowledge and attainable aspirations. What Would Maya Angelou Do?

Dr. Maya Angelou renowned poet, professor, singer, dancer, novelist and actress; passed away at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina today. She was 86, but the woman I first met in her book ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings’, was timeless. A peer of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and friend of Malcolm X, her voice transcended manmade barriers. Having never been to college, she received more than 30 honorary degrees. In 2011 president Barak Obama awarded her the Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.

I credit Dr. Angelou for installing in me the belief that courage is the most important human trait. She also said; “Forgiveness is the greatest gift you can give yourself” and “To know the end; look at the beginning.”

In times of great distress or challenges I would often ask: ‘What would Maya Angelou do?’

Oprah Winfrey said: “I consider it God’s gift to me – a Blessing Incarnate – to witness and experience Maya’s grand, open heart. Her willingness to serve.”

I awaited eagerly each new instalment of her autobiography and took pleasure and instruction from her profound wisdom and spirit of dignity, grace, courage, determination, integrity and generosity.

She would say, “Don’t bring the negative to my door.” She projected attention to the positive and highlighted common ground in order to unite. I can hear her say: “In the Eye of the Storm, in the Heat of the Flame, say Thank You – for your faith that deliverance is coming.”

Born on 4 April 1928, Maya grew up between St. Louis and the then racially-segregated Stamps, Arkansas. She had a difficult childhood surviving rape at the age of 7 and giving birth to her son, the writer Guy Johnson at age 17, a few weeks after her graduation from high school. She toured Europe in the mid-1950’s in the opera production of “Porgy and Bess” and in 1957 recorded the album “Calypso Lady”. She joined the Harlem Writers Guild in New York in 1958.

Combining the two things she loved best, writing and cooking, she published her first cookbook in 2004.

Maya spent time working as a newspaper editor in Egypt and Ghana. She spoke six languages. It was here that she wrote the first part of her autobiography. Her son says: “I was raised as an only child, but because of my mother I have many brothers and sisters. I share her easily because one cannot own the dew, the snow, the wind , the rain. It is a force of nature.”

Maya, I am passing on your instruction to me; “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.”

I Can See Clearly Now.

Just in time for Valentine’s day and ahead of its release in the US, comes the publication of Dr Wayne W. Dyer’s latest book ‘I Can See Clearly Now.’ It is an intimate look at four decades of the key experiences and decisions that have shaped his life. At every fork in the road Dr Dyer shows how seekers on a personal path to enlightenment can choose love over fear.

Dr Dyer shares personal experiences from his childhood in orphanages, his time in the American military and his drive and ambition to study and succeed. He writes  “to inspire you to look back at your own life to see how everything you have experienced has led you to where you are right now.”

Wayne takes us with him on his journey as he decides to leave behind a life in academia and write and promote his first book aimed at the public: ‘Your Erroneous Zones.’

Quoting Thoreau’s “You will meet with a success unexpected in common hours,” Dr Dyer shows how you can gain success by staying aligned with the highest vision you have for yourself.

In ‘Pulling Your Own Strings’ Wayne shares his own life philosophy teaching self reliance and self determination. He shows how to stand up for yourself at work and in your personal life. This book sets you free from feeling like a victim and allows you to control the fears and negative feelings that are keeping you from reaching your life’s potential.

In ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ Wayne tells of his repeat visit to Assisi in October 2000. At San Damiano whilst awaiting a knee replacement operation due to running injuries, he finds himself up a winding staircase, having to carry John Graybill, who has braces on his leg due to muscular dystrophy. Struggling under the weight and panicking when his knee fails, Wayne experiences a miraculous healing when he sees an apparition of St. Francis.

Dr Dyer is a New York Times bestselling author and has published more that 40 books. He is an internationally acclaimed speaker in the field of self-development. He holds a doctorate in educational counselling and was an associate professor at St. John’s University New York. ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ is available now at all bookstores in the UK and online. Are You Sitting Down?

Sit! This basic command to the family pet is one often exercised for extensive periods by the rest of the family at home, school or the office. “Sitting is the new smoking”, says Anup Kanodia; physician and researcher at the Centre For Personalised Health Care at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Centre.

An Australian study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in October 2012 stated that every one hour of  sitting watching TV, reduces a person’s life by 22 minutes, whilst every cigarette shortens a smoker’s life by about 11 minutes.

“The chair is out to kill us,” States James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. In the UK physical inactivity is responsible for 17% of early deaths. It is an international epidemic, causing 6% of deaths around the world, making it one of the top four global killers. It can shorten life expectancy by three to five years.

The cure for physical inactivity could be as simple as walking. It costs nothing and it’s health benefits are proven. It can reduce the risk from heart disease to breast cancer. All it takes is a little self motivation and determination. With some planning it can be done anywhere in all weather.

Sitting still burns very few calories and can pile on the pounds over time. Levine States that a person with a desk job may burn 300 calories a day at work whilst the same person might burn 2,300 per day in a job that requires considerable physical output. Sitting can lead to insulin resistance and suppress the production of lipase, which is essential for turning bad cholesterol into good. Thus the link between prolonged sitting, diabetes and heart disease.

What to do if your job calls for many hours of staying seated? A study published in Diabetes Care last year showed you can improve your glucose metabolism with a two minute walk every 20 minutes. It is recommended that people engage in 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity physical activity. This is equivalent to 30 minutes each day, 5 times per week.

Dr Hannah Bridges, senior information officer at Breakthrough Breast Cancer says, “Any activity that raises your pulse reduces your risk – so regular brisk walks are an easy and free way to get active.”
